Hatha yoga is the foundation of all the yoga systems which include body exercises, like Sivananda yoga, Iyengar yoga, Astanga vinyasa yoga etc.

As a term, Hatha yoga is probably the most widespread in West. Many times it is used to describe a practice which is characterized by static and long-lasting postures (asanas).

Its roots lie in the philosophy of Tantra, where the body is used as an important tool for inner searching. Hatha’s purpose is to prepare each individual for advanced practices.

An ill body is an obstacle for the mind and vice versa, an unbalanced mind has a direct consequence on the health of the body.

A Hatha yoga class includes asanas for muscular stamina, strength, flexibility and proper posture. It also includes pranayama (breathing techniques) aimed on expanding prana (vital energy).

Finally, classes also balance out the nervous system and teach relaxation techniques and meditation, in order to establish physical and spiritual calmness.
